The genesis for the creation of Sundial Theatre Company began in July 2003 with the production of Andrew Marineau's The Dotted Line at the Rachel M. Schlessigner Center for the Arts Lobby, NOVA Alexandria campus and was performed again in December 2003 at the Theatre on the Run in South Arlington.

The Dotted Line is a play about the life of Louis Braille who invented a system of reading and writing for the visually impaired now known as the Braille system. Despite world recognition of this widely-used systyem, found on elevator walls, restroom doorways, and even A.T.M. machines, few people knew anything about the man who created the famous dot system.  In fact, most people did not know that the creator of the dot system had a visual impairment himself.

In June 2006, Sundial performed David Lindsay's Abaire's Kimberly Akimbo at the Alden Theatre. Sundial's current production of Jeff Barker's Kin: The Trial of Carrie Buck will run at the Alden Theatre June 8 -10, 2007.

Sundial Theatre Company developed from the lack of awareness of issues of disability we discovered in our community. The community at large is detached from the stories, struggles, and accomplishments and unaware of contributions people with disabilities have made and continue to make. There are too few opportunities afforded theatre artists with disabilities in the Washington metropolitan area, the nation’s capital. Services such as audio description and sign interpretation are available, but rarely used.

Sundial Theatre Company recognizes a responsibility to engage and reconnect people with disabilities to the community as a whole. We endeavor to promote dialogue about disability, facilitating communication in an attempt to mitigate the pervasive feelings of marginality that so many persons with disabilities experience on a daily basis. We are enthusiastic about using theatre to highlight issues of disability. Sundial Theatre Company exists to enlighten, uplift, entertain, and serve the community in ways unimagined heretofore.
