Kin - The Trial of Carrie Buck
A two-act drama
by
JEFF BARKER
Directed by
ROSEMARY HARTMAN

The play is based on the true life story of a young woman who was institutionalized in Charlottesville, Virginia during the 1920's simply because she was poor and pregnant, and sterilized against her will. She was the subject of a United States Supreme Court case (based upon flimsy evidence) in which Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in his majority opinion wrote, "Three generations of imbeciles is enough." The case opened up the floodgates for the Eugenics movement across the United States for the next five decades, and the decision was referred to by the Nazi defendants in the Nuremberg trials as justification for their own medical experiments on concentration camp victims. The story is narrated with humor and pathos by the older Carrie who is now in her 70's, while she observes her younger self as the courtroom trial unfolds and the truth becomes clear to us through her eyes. It is a fascinating and well-written play. This will be the premier world professional production.
